When we graduate university and enter the real world, learning is put on our shoulders. Reading assignments, studying for a test, and homework will no longer be assigned by a teacher. It is up to us to continue to learn.

Adult Learning Theory is the concept of how adults learn and how it differs from children. The theory helps identify learning styles that best suit an organizations workforce.

Some organizations take adult learning really seriously. Learning is part of the organizations culture. Courses are self-directed by the individual and past experiences are taken into account. Throughout the company, there is an eagerness to learn new things as it is directed towards growth and development.

On the job training counts but it is only one avenue of the learning experience. Find an organization that takes learning seriously. If it is not a central priority of the company, take time out of your week for self-development.

Growing and learning is up to you now. The working world is changing fast. We have to be prepared to shift industries and skill sets every few years to keep up with the time. Learning will help enable growth to stay ahead. If you don't take it seriously no one else will.

I've been guilty of not taking learning seriously. I've cancelled corporate courses due to client demands. I've postponed certifications due to prioritizing personal obligations in my free time. I do not maximize my commute time for self-study through audio formats. I know there is more I can do in the areas of learning.

Ask your organization how they prioritize learning. Seek out opportunities to grow. Some of these opportunities may not be easy to find so ask your HR department or supervisor for support. Don't just rely on learning on the job. Take time to apply self-paced and instructor led training to your work.
